In July 2023, the Silantoi Youth Initiative concluded its campaign to End Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) with a series of impactful events at Ole Sankale Boarding School. The initiative, in partnership with the Narok County SGBV Office, organized friendly matches between local teams, including Mara Vocational School, Ole Sankale Boarding School, and the Narok East Women’s Football Team, and SYI women, fostering community engagement and raising awareness. Following the matches, the initiative facilitated crucial discussions with young girls from the region, addressing the challenges they face, particularly within the Maasai community. These discussions focused on the disproportionate impact of outdated cultural practices on women and girls. Participants learned about SGBV, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), and the dangers of early child marriage. Crucially, they gained practical knowledge about prevention and self-protection strategies, including how to recognize and report such situations, and where to seek assistance. The Silantoi Youth Initiative is confident that these young women are now better equipped and informed to safeguard their well-being. #womenempowerment.
